Labour will campaign to remain in EU if second referendum is called

The Labour party will campaign to remain in the EU if a second referendum is called, it has been announced.

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry confirmed the party’s stance and said: ‘If it’s a choice between that and a disastrous Tory Brexit, we will be campaigning to remain, because that’s all we can do.

‘We either get our policy through or anything else goes through to a public vote.’

Despite her confirmation, it is still not clear conditions would be put on a second referendum or even whether the choice to remain would be given.

The SNP has called on Corbyn to explicitly confirm that a the choice would be put on the table in the Labour-backed second referendum

Its Westminster leader, Ian Blackford, said: ‘Scotland did not vote for Brexit and we must not be dragged out of the EU against our will. Remaining is by far the best deal of all – and it is the only way to protect jobs and living standards’

The news comes shortly after Jeremy Corbyn signalled a huge shift in his party’s Brexit policy, and indicated he would tell him MPs to support the Cooper-Letwin amendment on Wednesday.

The amendment, put forward by Labour MP Yvette Cooper and Tory MP Sir Oliver Letwin, aims to delay the UK’s exit date from the EU by extending Article 50 if a deal is not agreed by Parliament by March 13.

Corbyn added that if it fails, they will instead call for a People’s Vote on the final deal with the EU.

However, sources within the Labout party have claimed it will only happen next month, when MPs vote on Theresa May’s final deal.

The announcement comes days after eight of his MPs quit the party to form the new Independent Group, partly over their frustrations over his failure to back a public vote.

Parliament is due to debate and vote on the next steps on Brexit on Wednesday, and lawmakers are expected to put down proposals, or amendments, including those which would demand the exit deal is put to a public vote.
